What is Ultra-Pure Iron?
Ultra-Pure Iron, also known as High Purity Iron, is a specialized grade of iron with a purity level of 99.99% (4N) or higher. It is produced through advanced electrolytic or chemical purification processes to minimize the content of interstitial elements like carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur. This exceptional purity gives it superior magnetic, electrical, and mechanical properties, making it an indispensable material for high-tech and mission-critical applications.
Huaxiao Metal is a trusted global supplier of ultra-pure iron, delivering exceptional quality and consistency for the world’s most demanding industries.
Ultra Pure Iron Production Process
The preparation of ultrapure iron (5N–6N, i.e., purity ≥99.995%–99.9999%) is extremely complex, as conventional smelting methods are unable to remove trace impurities (such as carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, silicon, manganese, and copper). Currently, the following methods are primarily used in industry and research:
1. Zone Refining
Principle: Exploiting the differences in the distribution coefficients of different elements between solids and liquids, a small section of an iron ingot is heated until it melts, and then the molten zone is slowly moved. Impurities are “pushed” to one end, achieving gradual purification.
Advantages: It can achieve extremely high purity (6N level) and is a common method for producing ultrapure iron for research.
Disadvantages: High cost and low yield, making it suitable for small-batch production.
2. Vacuum Melting
Method: Iron is melted in a high vacuum environment to reduce the dissolution of gases (O₂, N₂, H₂) and volatilize low-boiling-point impurities (such as sulfur, phosphorus, and some carbon compounds).
Advantages: Impurities are significantly reduced, resulting in high-purity iron (approximately 4N).
Disadvantages: Further removal of trace impurities is difficult, and other methods are usually required.
3. Electrolytic Refining
Method: High-purity iron is used as the anode, dissolved in an acidic electrolyte, and then the iron is deposited at the cathode.
Advantages: Effectively removes metallic impurities such as Cu, Ni, and Co.
Disadvantages: After electrolysis, the iron still requires further refining (such as zone melting) to achieve 5N–6N.
4. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
Method: Iron is first converted into a gaseous compound (such as iron carbonyl Fe(CO)₅), which is then decomposed and deposited at high temperature to form high-purity iron.
Advantages: Extremely high-purity iron powder or thin films can be obtained.
Applications: Mostly used in scientific research, electronic device manufacturing, and thin film material preparation.
5. Integrated Process
In actual production, a combination of methods is often used:
High-purity iron (4N) is first obtained through vacuum melting and electrolytic refining.
Ultrapurity iron (5N–6N) is then upgraded through zone melting or CVD.

FAQ
What is the difference between 4N (99.99%) and 5N (99.999%) ultra-pure iron?
The primary difference is the level of impurities. 5N pure iron has ten times fewer impurities than 4N, making it suitable for the most critical applications where material integrity and performance are paramount, such as in semiconductor and advanced research fields.
4N vs. 5N Ultra-Pure Iron: Which Grade Do You Really Need?
What is your Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)?
Our MOQ is flexible and depends on the product form and stock availability. Please contact our sales team with your requirements, and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.
How do you package the material to prevent contamination?
All ultra-pure iron products are cleaned and packed in a vacuum-sealed plastic bag within a controlled environment. This is then placed in protective containers (such as drums or wooden cases) to ensure the material arrives in pristine condition.
